The Hotel Majestic in San Francisco was built in 1902 on the estate of Milton Schmidt, a turn of the century railroad magnate and member of the California State Legislature. Two years later, in 1904, Senator Schmidt moved on and the building became the Hotel Majestic. Two years after that, the Great Earthquake of 1906 struck. The terrible fires that ravaged the city were halted at Van Ness Avenue, two blocks from The Majestic. This stroke of luck has made The Majestic San Francisco's oldest continuously operating hotel. Later in the 1980's the Hotel was a Gay bath house and according to a former resident who now resides in Oklahoma the owner reportedly used to park a Harley Davidson in the Lobby. The Hotel has now been restored to it's original Victorian era charm and is deemed one of the most "romantic haunted Hotels" according to guests interviewed at the Hotel.
Lisa G of CRIS and Natalie her daughter checked into the Hotel on Feb 25, 2010 immediately after checking into room 403 on the 4th floor Lisa noticed what appeared to be an anomalous shadow move across the floral print wall paper. She inquired with her niece who is employed by the Hotel about possible hauntings ? Her niece verified that numerous stories of sightings, banging, clanging and strange phenomena had been reported at the Hotel. According to one account, the original owners daughter had died in the hotel on the 4th floor which was originally one suite. Her portrait hangs in the Lobby [ photo to the right]. Many Guests have told of their eerie experiences while staying on the fourth floor, in particular room 407. It has been reported that the bathtub mysteriously fills with water. Others noted that a ghost walks the hallway late at night, with keys clanging along the walls. Another story involves a production manager who was staying at the Majestic while filming Sweet November. Late at night she reported to the front desk staff that her bed was shaking and thought it was an earthquake, which was not the case. These unexplainable occurrences have left many guests wondering whose spirit walks these halls ?
Lisa then went on to interview several employees who work at the hotel. John the bartender stated that one evening while he was working on unclogging a drain in the sink behind the bar, he had used a stretched out coat hanger to work on the drain. He stated that he laid the wire on the bar no more than 3 feet from where he was working for a few minutes and the coat hanger just disappeared ! Another helper was present and both of them were completely baffled by this event and the hanger has never been found to this day. The night desk clerk reported that he hears strange voices in the Lobby and has been "creeped out" many times while working alone at night.
Intrigued by the Hotel's history Lisa requested to stay in room 407 the following night but the room was occupied. As she was waiting for the elevator to the Lobby to check out, the door opened to 407 ! Lisa peered in and saw 3 young girls open the door. Lisa inquired about the room and one of the girls confessed unbeknownst to the others, she had asked for room 407 due to the haunting stories. The young women were kind enough to let Lisa come in and share her EVP's that had been documented during her stay. As Lisa entered the room she counted 5 young women who graciously allowed her to photograph the room. After sharing the evidence Lisa asked for a group photo of all of them before leaving. It wasn't until reviewing the photo did Lisa realize there were actually only 4 girls present ! Baffled by this she had Natalie call the desk at the Hotel to confirm how many guests were in room 407 on the 25th and 26th of Feb? Chris the Hotel clerk verified only 4 girls had lodged in room 407. Lisa recalled the 5th girl was shy and didn't speak but stood by the mirror and listened intently to the playback of the EVP.
